There were several non-Big 4 teams in action this weekend. Let's take a look at how different teams did across the state-
UNCC- It was a hard fought matchup, but UNC Charlotte went down against James Madison, 48-40. The 49ers started the game down 21-0 and battled back to fall just short. Former Georgia Tech Vad Lee proved too much to handle for the Charlotte defense, as he dominated the game with 6 total TD’s.
ECU- Shane Carden threw for 445 yards under the lights on Thursday night as East Carolina barely squeaked by 1-6 UCONN, 31-21. The game was close throughout the evening until the Pirates pulled away in the 4th quarter. This won’t be a win that impresses the selection committee when it comes to ECU getting into a major bowl, but at least they remain undefeated in conference play.
Gardner-Webb- The Bulldogs had a rough trip to Lynchburg as they fell to Liberty 34-0. The Gardner-Webb offense struggled, only managing to produce 6 first downs and going 1-15 on 3rd downs. We don’t see them bounding back well next week, as they host top 5 power Coastal Carolina.
Davidson- The Wildcats rough season continued with a disappointing loss to Stetson. Davidson had more first downs, yards, and time of possession, but 5 turnovers led to a 40-34 defeat.
Western Carolina- Homecoming was good this year for the Catamounts, as they scored a 29-15 win over The Citadel. WCU was clicking on both sides of the ball, racking up 633 yards of offense and forcing 4 Bulldog turnovers. Saturday’s game featured the 10th largest crowd for a WCU game ever, and next week the Catamounts host Chattanooga, with each team putting their undefeated conference record on the line for a shot at first place.
