The Campbell Fighting Camels (Big South)-
The Campbell Fighting Camels are looking to build off of a 12-20 season as they move into Head Coach Kevin McGeehan’s second season with the program. The team has never really only had high expectations, and this season is no exception. Campbell has 1 all-time NCAA tournament appearance and it doesn’t seem like that will change this season. However, anything can happen at this level and the Camels do have a few bright spots. They return 4 of the top 5 scorers from last season’s team, and there isn’t a clear cut frontrunner in the Big South. They have an out of conference date with Davidson as well as facing off with UNC-Asheville, High Point, and Gardner-Webb in league play. Despite that, I don’t think this is the year for the Camels. They do, however, have a young team, with only two seniors, so the future is bright if this core of young players can gel well this season.
Reco McCarter- F (Sr.) McCarter was the leading scorer for the Camels last season and will be looking to go out with a good season after playing through a tough stretch of years for the Campbell program. If he can take his game to the next level, this team might be able to contend for a Big South title with a few lucky breaks.
D.J. Mason- F (Jr.) The other Campbell forward will be looking to take over the reins of this team next season, but as far as this year foes, Mason will have to continue to provide help for McCarter. Mason was the team’s second leading scorer last season with nearly 11 PPG, and if he can evolve into a real second threat, the Camels will have a legit offense in the Big South.
PREDICTION- I’m actually a little bit higher than most people on the Camels. I think they have a chance to contend for the Big South’s bid to the tournament. However, just because I think they have a chance doesn’t mean I think they will. I predict a 16-15 season for Campbell, with a 10-8 conference record. Next year is the year in my opinion, but this will be a successful season for a program looking to establish an identity.
